The Secrets of Jamal Khashoggi: What They Didn't Want You to Know

Even though it has been quite some time since the world-renowned journalist Jamal Khashoggi passed away, the secrets behind his story and the truths they absolutely did not want you to know remain jaw-dropping to this day. Most people simply know that Khashoggi was brutally assassinated inside a consulate for criticizing the Saudi government. But the real reason the authorities wanted to hide this from the world runs much deeper than that. Khashoggi wasn't just an ordinary reporter; he had been deeply connected with top Saudi royal family members and intelligence chiefs for decades. He knew the government's inner secrets inside out, and that made him their greatest threat. He had a profound understanding of the darkest secrets of the authoritarian regime, and more importantly, he possessed the global influence and a powerful pen to expose them to the world.

In reality, Khashoggi was once a veteran journalist who was highly popular and well-connected within the Saudi royal family and government circles. However, everything flipped upside down when Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) rose to power. While the Crown Prince was busy showcasing reforms to modernize Saudi Arabia, he was simultaneously crushing dissidents and critics without mercy—something Khashoggi simply couldn't stomach. Because of this, Khashoggi left for the United States and began writing sharp, relentless critiques in The Washington Post, exposing the Saudi government's authoritarian moves, its involvement in the Yemen war, and its human rights violations. This raises the question: why did they resort to such a brutal assassination just for some criticism? Ultimately, it was because Khashoggi’s pen carried immense weight, not just in the Arab world, but on an international scale. His articles severely damaged the "modern and open country" image that the Saudi government was desperately trying to project to the world.

What is even more terrifying is the truth they wanted to hide at all costs: the new projects Khashoggi was secretly setting up near the end. After moving to the U.S., he was quietly launching an online counter-movement called the "Bee Army" to fight back against the Saudi government's online propaganda troll armies. On top of that, he was building a powerful network, bringing together international dissidents and activists to bring free speech and the light of democracy to the entire Arab world. To the Saudi Crown Prince and the ruling authorities, this looked like a revolutionary seed that could directly shake their throne, and it terrified them. This direct threat to the royal family's hold on power is exactly why they decided to silence him for good.

When the secret report from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) regarding this assassination was finally released, it stunned the world. The CIA's definitive assessment concluded that no one would have dared to pull off an operation of this scale without the direct authorization or order of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman himself. The CIA intercepted communications and analyzed phone logs, discovering evidence that the Saudi ambassador—who happens to be the Crown Prince's brother—personally called Khashoggi to direct him to the consulate in Istanbul. That's not all; a report by Agnes Callamard, the United Nations (UN) special rapporteur on human rights, also firmly pointed out that this was a state-sanctioned killing, holding the Crown Prince and top officials directly accountable. Secret audio files obtained by Turkish intelligence further proved that the moment Khashoggi stepped into the consulate, a 15-member Saudi hit squad was waiting for him. The audio evidence captured them telling him, "We have to take you back," before brutally strangling him to death.

Ultimately, in October 2018, Khashoggi was assassinated in cold blood inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. The Saudi government consistently denied the allegations, claiming it wasn't the Crown Prince's order but rather a "rogue operation" carried out by lower-level intelligence agents on their own accord, and they even handed out show-trial sentences to a few suspects. However, the international intelligence reports have already firmly etched the truth into history, making it crystal clear who was really behind the act. They chose to eliminate Khashoggi in such a horrific manner inside a consulate not just to silence him, but to terrify and intimidate every other critic around the globe. Yet, what they desperately tried to hide is the undeniable truth that you cannot destroy a person's ideas, secrets, and yearning for freedom just by killing them. The very words of Khashoggi that they tried to bury away from the world continue to pierce through the hearts of autocrats, remaining a constant threat to this day.
