Me and Bangladesh

Me and Bangladesh

When I say “Bangladesh,” I can even call it my second home. Why? Because it’s where my parents live, where my childhood friends are, where I once had someone I loved, and where many of my relatives still reside. Among my memorable trips, the journeys along the Myanmar border and the nights at Cox’s Bazar beach are truly part of my life.
Out of all these memories, the thing I’d describe as “The Good, The Best and The Ugly” is the singing and dancing part of traditional Bangladeshi weddings. Their weddings are incredibly grand and full of events. Every ceremony has its own unique customs that never get boring. Among them, what I want to share is my younger brother’s bachelor night party. The dinner was served buffet-style.
Most guests sat on the floor, and in one corner, there was a Qawwali group. When I arrived around 8 p.m., some desserts were already laid out. Qawwali, as you may know, is Sufi devotional music—poetic songs praising the Prophet, accompanied by traditional instruments.
Around 9:30 p.m., the buffet dinner began. By then, the hall was full. Inside the dining area, you could hear relatives chatting, while outside, my brothers and I were smoking and talking, all with the sound of Qawwali in the background—lively and bustling.
By around 10:30 p.m., the Qawwali shifted to modern Bollywood film songs. The aunties started inviting us younger ones to come inside and join. Around 11:30 p.m., as the music played, the singers began repeating a relative’s name in the song. That person would then get up and dance, while everyone cheered them on. It was a way of calling everyone in the family to join. Truly, it was a heartwarming family moment.
At that point, my father came over and handed me a folded bundle of cash. “When it’s your turn to dance, throw this money near the singer,” he told me. That’s when I noticed that everyone who got up to dance would toss money as a gesture of appreciation. When the singers called out the names of our elder aunties, even their sons and daughters-in-law would join in the dancing. It was pure family joy. Some families even danced together in groups—it was truly delightful. That night, the band must have earned quite a bit of money.
After this segment, the Qawwali ended, Bollywood beats took over, and a DJ arrived. By around 2 a.m., some people were dancing, others were leaving, while my brothers and I were still coming up with new ideas to keep the fun going. It was genuinely enjoyable.
Another event is when the groom, his family, and relatives visit the bride’s house. What should we call this? The groom arrives with a decent entourage, many gifts, a full house of relatives, dinner, and musical entertainment—should we call it a procession, a party, or a celebration? That part isn’t so unusual. What’s unique is the poetic verses and lyrics they sing.
For example, if the groom’s father is a famous contractor, the song might teasingly go: “A contractor who builds towers with sand, no cement at all…” And for the women, they’d sing playful lines like: “Curvy hips, pouty lips, what a beauty!”—played with such lively beats that you can’t help but feel amused, maybe even pretend to get upset and threaten to leave.
But don’t worry. When the bride’s family visits the groom’s house later, the groom’s side does the same—singing poetic verses and playing lively tunes. It’s truly an unforgettable, love-filled, playful wedding tradition—a unique test of affection.
If you look at all this with a modern, positive mindset—as an Ice Breaker that melts the coldness between two families, removing pretense and bringing genuine joy—it becomes something truly meaningful and beautiful.

Smuggled Cattle Transiting Through Myanmar

Smuggled Cattle Transiting Through Myanmar

I am posting this as I imagine the countless cattle currently trekking along Zaka Hussein Road in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

Nowadays, when people in Myanmar see herds of cattle being transported by large trucks on the highways, everyone knows: "Ah, they’re headed to China again." However, the story of where these cattle originate and how they reach the border is as intriguing as a movie plot.

In reality, these are not just local cattle. Many are "guest cattle" that have crossed the borders from India and Bangladesh. Entering through the western border via towns like Tamu and Kalay, these massive herds cross through central Myanmar, bypass the roads near the waterfalls in Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo), and head toward the Muse border in Northern Shan State. We refer to this as the "Cattle Route."

The primary challenges on this smuggling route are the "checkpoints." Since there are many gates on the main highways, smugglers rely more on forest trails. They drive the cattle during the late hours of the night using village-to-village paths and mountain bypasses. Sometimes, the cattle are loaded onto large trucks and disguised as ordinary goods.

The flow of money behind this business is significant. The route only operates smoothly through "understandings" with local authorities and armed groups. Consequently, the world of "cattle smuggling" is as dangerous as it is highly profitable.

However, there are serious concerns behind these activities. Illegal transit can spread animal diseases, and the nation loses out on tax revenue that a rightful people's government should receive. In the future, a systematic process should be allowed with a formal cross-border tax of about 5%.

Currently, thousands of cattle remain stuck in camps around Muse and near the 105-Mile Trade Zone, unable to cross into China. As their stay at the border stretches on, traders face the possibility of massive losses due to the cattle starving, losing weight, and falling ill.

Even if they attempt to bypass the fences, the Chinese border is now equipped with newly installed Thermal Cameras. Since these cameras can detect heat signatures from a range of 25 to 48 kilometers, the likelihood of being caught while attempting to sneak across has increased significantly.

While a cow in Myanmar is estimated to be worth between 2.5 to 3.5 million Kyats, successfully transporting it to the Chinese side can fetch over 6 million Kyats. However, due to current military instability and tightened border security, I believe the business is now closer to a loss than a profit.

The exact routes could potentially be tracked by attaching GPS devices to the cattle's collars.

Everything I Know About Yaba

By Aung Myo Lwin

I think I first encountered "Yaba" around 2012. I started noticing it while traveling to Shweli (Ruili). I observed young women selling it in certain parts of the city. Later, when I entered the computer accessories import business, I became even more aware of it.

Here is how it happened: I was importing computer parts from China. I bought from the same shops as the other importers, but there was no way I could compete with their prices. Some shops on Seikkantha Road were selling items at the exact same prices found in Shweli. After meeting with some major businessmen in Shweli, I finally understood the situation. They weren't actually in the business of importing computer accessories; they were using the parts as a front for transporting Yaba. Their goal was simply to liquidate the inventory as quickly as possible once the goods reached Yangon. They would tell the local shops, "Take whatever you want—on credit, or at 'Jiegao' prices (rock-bottom prices)." Consequently, I stopped importing and ended up in a position where I had to buy from them to resell.

Later on, the Yaba trade moved from Mandalay to Maungdaw, and from Yangon via fish carriers to the "Mingon" naval base in Sittwe. From there, it traveled to Maungdaw and into Bangladesh. It wasn’t long before production capabilities emerged within the Maungdaw and Buthidaung areas. During the Rakhine conflict, with travel restricted and information blacked out, the military and certain local groups reportedly collaborated behind closed doors to share the profits.

Bangladeshi intelligence is well aware of this. You can read the international reports on Google; I’m not just making this up. I have deep information networks within Rakhine State, and I consider Bangladesh my second home. I want you to know that the "Bangladeshi Consul in Sittwe" mentioned in my story "Me and Plane Crashes" later became a high-ranking intelligence officer in Bangladesh before retiring. They are fully aware of these details. At that time, a wealthy man—originally from the Myanmar border but who had become successful in Chittagong—was arrested by a RAB (Rapid Action Battalion) unit. I happened to be on a flight to Bangladesh with the detainee's wife at the time of the arrest. I contacted the head of the Chittagong RAB, Mr. Amdat, to inquire, but it was unsuccessful. He warned me not to get involved, so I couldn't help. As it turned out, the Financial Minister of Bangladesh at the time was from Chittagong. While attending an Iftar (fast-breaking) event in Chittagong, the Minister mentioned he wanted to see his friend—this Myanmar-born businessman. Only then did the RAB release him on bail.

Yaba later became rampant in Yangon, available everywhere. Initially, a single pill was 3,000 Kyats. A pack of 10 pills wrapped in foil was called a "tann" (a row), costing 30,000 Kyats. However, in Muse, the price was only 450 Kyats. As soon as it hit the major cities, the price plummeted/skyrocketed. In Yangon, there was a variety known as "Army-produced Yaba," which had low "Ice" (methamphetamine) content and poor quality. Later, I heard of groups producing high-quality stuff inside cargo trucks in Yangon. They say that if you place it on foil and heat it, and it sparkles brightly, it contains high-quality Ice.

The Anti-Vice Department (known as "Da-Na") could tell a house was using Yaba just by catching the "rose-like" chemical scent while passing the front door. When they raided a house, they wouldn't look for the foil, lighters, needles, water bottles, or straws first. Instead, they specifically looked for chewing gum or gum wrappers. Finding those was taken as a sign of Yaba use. Eventually, Yaba production began in Bangladesh as well. After that, the market in Rakhine collapsed, and internal conflicts broke out between the military and local groups.

(Whether you believe this or not, take it as a story or a personal perspective.)

Note: For Marijuana, America is the best; but for other narcotics, Myanmar’s products are top-tier.

Did my grandfather's lost lawsuit actually become a Case Law?
At that time, Abdul Bari Chowdhury, the owner of the ABC Group of Companies, was operating a shipyard, shipping lines (running routes from Yangon-Ahlone to Mandalay-Sein Pan and other towns in the Ayeyarwady Region, as well as from Yangon-Ahlone [modern-day Bo Aung Kyaw Port] to India), rice mills, and coal businesses.
During the years 1929-30, the export of coal from our Kyimyindaing businesses slowed down significantly. Furthermore, due to a drastic drop in rice prices, our rice merchants faced heavy losses. To mutually protect the operational costs for the upcoming farming season, freight charges had to be issued on credit. Amidst facing the Great Depression of 1929–30 and suffering severe financial losses, it is known that a dispute arose with the Income Tax Department. The lawsuit was lost, and some ships had to be sold to settle the tax liabilities. (Tracing History: The house where Abdul Bari Chowdhury lived was nationalized during the Ne Win era. Today, the main two-story brick-foundation wooden building still stands as B.E.H.S (5) Ahlone.)
Although we gained independence, we have not fully escaped the shadow of the colonial tax system to this day. A significant change, however, is that in the modern era, taxpayers have the right to appeal the tax assessment calculated by tax officers—a right that did not exist [in the same manner] during the British colonial era.
