ထိုစဉ်က ABC လုပ်ငန်းစုပိုင်ရှင် Abdul Bari Chowdhury သည် သင်္ဘောကျင်းလုပ်ငန်းနှင့် ရေကြောင်းသယ်ယူပို့ဆောင်ရေးလုပ်ငန်း (Shipping Line) များ လုပ်ကိုင်ခဲ့ပါသည်။ ထိုစဉ်က ပြေးဆွဲသည့် ခရီးစဉ်လမ်းကြောင်းများမှာ ရန်ကုန်(အလုံ)မှ မန္တလေး(စိန်ပန်း) ကြားမြို့များအပါအဝင် ဧရာဝတီတိုင်းအတွင်းရှိ မြို့များနှင့်၊ ရန်ကုန်(အလုံ)မှ (ယနေ့ခေတ် ဗိုလ်အောင်ကျော်ဆိပ်ကမ်း) အိန္ဒိယအထိ ဖြစ်ပါသည်။ ထို့ပြင် ဆန်စက်လုပ်ငန်းများနှင့် ကျောက်မီးသွေးလုပ်ငန်းများကိုလည်း လုပ်ကိုင်နေသည့် ကာလဖြစ်သည်။
၁၉၂၉-၃၀ ကာလများတွင် ကြည့်မြင်တိုင်ရှိ မိမိတို့၏ ကျောက်မီးသွေးလုပ်ငန်းများ ပြည်ပတင်ပို့မှု နှေးကွေးသွားခြင်း၊ မိမိတို့ ဆန်ကုန်သည်များ၏ ဆန်ဈေးများ အလွန်ကျဆင်းသွားသဖြင့် နောင်နှစ် လယ်ယာလုပ်ငန်းအတွက် ကုန်ကျစရိတ် အပြန်အလှန်ကာကွယ်နိုင်ရန် သင်္ဘောတင်ခများကို အကြွေးချပေးထားရခြင်းတို့ ကြုံတွေ့ခဲ့ရသည်။ ထိုသို့ ၁၉၂၉–၃၀ ကမ္ဘာ့စီးပွားရေးပျက်ကပ် (Great Depression) ကို ရင်ဆိုင်နေရပြီး လွန်စွာအရှုံးပေါ်နေချိန်တွင် အခွန်ဌာနနှင့် အမှုဖြစ်ခဲ့သည်ဟု သိရှိရပါသည်။ ထိုအမှုရှုံးသဖြင့် သင်္ဘောအချို့ ရောင်းချပြီး အခွန်ဆောင်ခဲ့ရပါသည်။ (သမိုင်းခြေရာ - ထိုစဉ်က Abdul Bari Chowdhury နေထိုင်ခဲ့သည့်အိမ်မှာ နေဝင်းခေတ်တွင် ပြည်သူပိုင်သိမ်းဆည်းခံခဲ့ရပြီး၊ ယနေ့ အ.ထ.က.(၅) အလုံ အဖြစ် ယနေ့တိုင် ပင်မနှစ်ထပ် အုတ်ခံပျဉ်ထောင်အိမ်ကြီး တည်ရှိဆဲဖြစ်ပါသည်။)
လွတ်လပ်ရေးရရှိခဲ့သော်လည်း ကျွန်ပြုအခွန်စနစ်၏ အရိပ်အာဝါသအောက်မှ ယနေ့တိုင် မလွတ်မြောက်ခဲ့ပါ။ ထူးခြားသည့် ပြောင်းလဲမှုအနေဖြင့် အခွန်အရာရှိမှ အခွန်ပမာဏတွက်ချက်မှုအပေါ် ယနေ့ခေတ်တွင် အယူခံခွင့်ရှိပြီး အင်္ဂလိပ်ခေတ်က (ယခုကဲ့သို့) မရှိခဲ့ပါ။

Did my grandfather's lost lawsuit actually become a Case Law?
At that time, Abdul Bari Chowdhury, the owner of the ABC Group of Companies, was operating a shipyard, shipping lines (running routes from Yangon-Ahlone to Mandalay-Sein Pan and other towns in the Ayeyarwady Region, as well as from Yangon-Ahlone [modern-day Bo Aung Kyaw Port] to India), rice mills, and coal businesses.
During the years 1929-30, the export of coal from our Kyimyindaing businesses slowed down significantly. Furthermore, due to a drastic drop in rice prices, our rice merchants faced heavy losses. To mutually protect the operational costs for the upcoming farming season, freight charges had to be issued on credit. Amidst facing the Great Depression of 1929–30 and suffering severe financial losses, it is known that a dispute arose with the Income Tax Department. The lawsuit was lost, and some ships had to be sold to settle the tax liabilities. (Tracing History: The house where Abdul Bari Chowdhury lived was nationalized during the Ne Win era. Today, the main two-story brick-foundation wooden building still stands as B.E.H.S (5) Ahlone.)
Although we gained independence, we have not fully escaped the shadow of the colonial tax system to this day. A significant change, however, is that in the modern era, taxpayers have the right to appeal the tax assessment calculated by tax officers—a right that did not exist [in the same manner] during the British colonial era.
