The World is Curved

This does not refer to the physical curvature of the Earth. Instead, it is a metaphor for how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) "bend" space, time, and language, effectively bringing distant points together. While the "flat world" made everything faster, the "curved world" makes everything immediate, creating an experience where we feel truly present with one another.
The primary drivers of this shift are AI and immersive technology. AI bends the vast ocean of information around you, understanding your interests and needs to proactively deliver the knowledge, entertainment, and connections you seek. Furthermore, real-time AI translation is effectively dissolving the cultural and linguistic barriers between people. Meanwhile, Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) provide the clearest evidence of a "curved" world. The moment you put on a headset, the physical distance between a colleague in New York and a friend in Tokyo vanishes, as you sit together in the same virtual room. This level of connection goes far beyond a standard video call; it genuinely "bends" physical reality to create a profound sense of presence.
Marshall McLuhan’s concept of the "Global Village" has finally come to life through the internet, but AI is now pushing that village into a new dimension. This is no longer just about connectivity; it is a force that will fundamentally alter our thinking, our beliefs, and our structures of power. From a social perspective, AI creates "Hyper-Personalized Reality," which risks fracturing society into isolated bubbles. In education, while "AI Personal Tutors" offer every child access to elite-level learning, it also poses new challenges for critical thinking and interpersonal development.
In the economy, the very definition of "work" will change as AI and robots take over administrative, creative, and physical tasks. Religiously, AI’s ability to analyze sacred texts and generate "personalized spiritual guidance" could challenge the traditional authority of established religions. Militarily, we are entering an era of "AI Commanders" and Lethal Autonomous Weapons (LAWS), where victory may be determined by the processing speed of algorithms rather than human strategy.
At the summit of these changes lies the potential arrival of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)—a machine intelligence that surpasses human capability. This will inevitably give rise to new ideologies:
Dataism: The belief that human emotion and judgment are flawed, and that decisions made by algorithms are the only objective, efficient, and fair path forward.
Digital Transhumanism: The effort to transcend human biological limitations—aging, illness, and death—by merging with technology and uploading consciousness.
AI Conservatism: A reactionary movement dedicated to protecting human values, culture, and emotion from technological encroachment, potentially calling for strict limits or the dismantling of AI systems.
If the "flat world" was about connecting information, the "curved world" is about sharing experiences. We are moving from communication on a 2D screen to living together within a 3D space. This new paradigm will fundamentally reshape how we work, learn, play, and relate to one another. It will undoubtedly be recorded as one of the most significant revolutions in human history. The greatest challenge for humanity in the 21st century will not be the technology itself, but our ability to determine how we will coexist with the limitless power we have created and how we choose to govern it.
